Peer Support Services offers you, the foster parent, two fantastic ways to connect with another experienced foster parent.
Our foster parent volunteers all have at least five years of fostering experience. This means PSS Volunteers have a broad range of fostering experiences, making them an incredible support resource for you to access.

When might you want to call another foster parent via On-Call Peer Support?
- You want to talk to someone who understands the unique needs of a trauma-affected child; someone who may have experienced similar to what’s going on in your home right now.
- You need to process your feelings around the complex emotions involved in fostering. For example, feelings surrounding a child preparing to leave your home and return to their birth family or transition to adoption.
- You have a question about what resources are available to support you or the roles and responsibilities of the Department of Community Services, Mi’kmaw Children & Family Services, or Federation of Foster Families of Nova Scotia.
- You are looking to hear the perspective or experiences of another foster parent about a certain question or situation.
One-on-One Peer Support
The One-on-One Peer Support program is an opportunity for support focused on new foster parents, to help you orient into your new and unfamiliar role. New foster parents will be matched with one of our experienced foster parent volunteers who will provide regular contact and support for a period of six months.
If you are a new foster parent who has not yet been offered a volunteer match, and you wish to be matched, please contact Kim Bulger at 1-888-845-1555
